Hand saws
Carpentry hand saws and Japanese saws
Hand saws for cutting wood are a basic tool for cutting wood in every house and workshop. There are many kinds of saws:
- Rip Saws - for cutting wood along the grain
- Crosscut Saws - for cutting wood perpendiculary to the grain
- Band saws - has a stiffening rib on the edge opposite the cutting edge. Used for precise work, such as cutting dovetails, mitres, or tenons in cabinetry and joinery. Because of the stiffening rib, backsaws are limited in the depth to which they can cut.
- Japanese Saws - they differ from European Saws not only by shape but also by way they are used. While using Japanese Saws cutting occurs only during pulling the saw. This means that japanese saws have thinner, lighter and smoother blades; resulting in faster work and more precise cuts with narrow a kerf.
