The No. 5 "Jack" is a solidly constructed plane for versatile use. It is particularly intended for leveling and flattening raw wood surfaces and for preliminary smoothing. Its size and lightweight design allow for achieving a flat surface on the workpiece.
The body is made from spheroidal cast iron, characterized by high strength and impact resistance. The knobs and other small components are made from solid brass—an ideal material for moving parts.
The plane features adjustments for the frog, blade depth and angle, a lateral blade adjustment lever, and mouth width. The 50mm wide blade is made from high-carbon steel, ground and beveled at a 25° angle.
Before the first use, the tip of the blade should be sharpened at a 30° angle—this can be easily achieved by running the blade over a water stone a few times using a guide. This will allow for excellent, fine shavings.
