They are used to cut grooves, indentations, housings, and to create keyways. Straight cutters are also very useful when milling shallow recesses, for example for hinges.

The shortest possible cutter corresponding to the depth you want to achieve is usually recommended. Shorter cutters minimize vibration, ensure a clean cut, and provide longer router life.
