Professional Japanese Oire Nomi Chisel by Kanetomo
The Kanetomo Oire Nomi is a traditional Japanese woodworking chisel, ideal for general-purpose use, including tasks such as joinery, furniture making, and construction of doors and frames. It can be struck with a hammer.
This chisel is characterized by its high hardness of approximately 63 HRC and is made from high-carbon Shirogami tool steel, also known as White Paper Steel. In Japan, Shirogami is a high-quality tool steel, perfect for creating chisels and knives. The chisel is laminated, meaning the blade consists of two layers: one of soft steel and one of hard steel.
The handle is made from red oak (akagashi) and finished with a metal ring.
Specifications:
- Blade width: 42mm
- Working length: 58mm
- Total length: 225mm
(Note: Images show a chisel with a 24mm blade width.)
The chisel is pre-sharpened and ready for use. It can be struck with a metal hammer, but it is essential to position the metal ring as close to the blade as possible so that the hammer contacts the end of the wooden handle. We recommend occasionally oiling the end of the handle to prevent cracking and extend its lifespan. Japanese Oire Nomi chisels feature a characteristic recess on the back, reducing the contact area between the tool and the material.
Due to its short blade length, this chisel is not intended for deep cuts and should not be used as a lever (it is not a mortise or paring chisel).
