Professional Japanese Oire Nomi Chisel by Kanetomo
The Kanetomo Oire Nomi is a traditional Japanese woodworking chisel, designed for general-purpose use, including tasks like joinery, furniture making, door and frame construction, and more. It can be struck with a hammer.
This chisel is distinguished by its high hardness of approximately 63 HRC and is made from Shirogami high-carbon tool steel, commonly known as White Paper Steel. In Japan, Shirogami is a high-quality tool steel, ideal for making chisels and knives. The chisel is laminated, meaning the blade is constructed from two layers: soft and hard steel.
The handle is made from red oak (akagashi) and finished with a metal hoop.
Specifications:
- Blade width: 9mm
- Working length: 58mm
- Total length: 225mm
(Note: Images show a 24mm wide chisel.)
The chisel is pre-sharpened and ready for use. It can be struck with a metal hammer, but it's recommended to set the metal hoop as close to the blade as possible, allowing the hammer to make contact with the end of the wooden handle. Occasionally, oiling the end of the handle is advised to prevent splitting and extend its lifespan. Japanese Oire Nomi chisels feature a distinctive recess on the back to reduce contact area between the tool and the material.
Due to its short blade length, this chisel is not intended for deep cuts and should not be used as a lever (it is not a mortise or paring chisel).
