Product Dimensions and Weight
Professional Japanese Chisel Oire Nomi by Nomikatsu
The Nomikatsu Oire Nomi is a traditional Japanese woodworking chisel designed for general-purpose use, including tasks such as joinery, furniture making, door and frame construction, and more. It can be struck with a hammer.
This chisel features a high hardness of approximately 63 HRC and is made from high-carbon Shirogami tool steel, also known as White Paper Steel. Shirogami is a high-quality tool steel in Japan, ideal for chisels and knives. The chisel is laminated, meaning the blade consists of two layers: soft and hard steel.
The handle is made from red oak (akagashi) and is finished with a metal ring.
Specifications:
- Blade width: 48mm
- Working length: 58mm
- Total length: 225mm
The chisel is pre-sharpened and ready for use. It can be struck with a metal hammer, but it’s important to position the metal ring as close to the blade as possible so the hammer makes contact with the end of the wooden handle. We recommend occasionally oiling the end of the handle to prevent cracking and extend its lifespan. Japanese Oire Nomi chisels have a characteristic recess on the back to reduce contact area between the tool and the material.
Due to its short blade length, this chisel is not intended for deep cuts and should not be used as a lever (it is neither a mortise nor a paring chisel).
