Professional Japanese Oire Nomi Chisel by Kanetomo
This Kanetomo Oire Nomi chisel is a traditional Japanese woodworking chisel designed for general-purpose use. It is ideal for standard woodworking tasks, joinery, furniture making, and constructing doors, frames, and more. It can be struck with a hammer.
The chisel has a high hardness of approximately 63 HRC and is made from high-carbon Shirogami tool steel, also known as White Paper Steel. In Japan, Shirogami is a high-quality tool steel that is excellent for producing chisels and knives. This chisel is laminated, meaning the blade consists of two layers: a soft steel layer and a hard steel layer.
The handle is made of red oak (akagashi) and is finished with a metal ring.
Specifications:
- Blade width: 15mm
- Working length: 58mm
- Total length: 225mm
(Note: Images show a chisel with a 24mm blade width.)
The chisel is sharpened and ready to use. It can be struck with a metal hammer, but it's important to push the metal ring as close to the blade as possible so the hammer strikes the end of the wooden handle. We recommend occasionally oiling the end of the handle to prevent cracking and extend its lifespan. Japanese Oire Nomi chisels feature a characteristic recess on the back, which reduces the contact area between the tool and the material.
Due to its short blade length, this chisel is not suitable for deep cuts and should not be used as a lever (it is not a mortise or paring chisel).
